Treatment and Prevention of Sinusitis

Sinusitis is referred to as the inflammation of the sinuses, which may be due to allergy or viral infection. Most of the time, this condition can bring a lot of discomfort and uneasiness since it can cause mucus to build up and clog the nasal cavities. Although sinusitis usually goes away after just a few days, you can use some home remedy to treat and prevent it.

The nasal passages can be cleared with the use of steam. One way to do it is by breathing in steam from a cup or a bowl. Saline solution will also do the trick. There are saline solutions sold in pharmacies but you can also create your own at home. Just put one tablespoon of spoon into hot water, place it in a spray bottle, and spray directly to your nasal passages.

Sometimes, sinusitis can create pain in the face and even the neck area. To alleviate the pain, use hot compress. Get a towel and place it on your forehead for at least ten minutes or until the pain subsides. You can also use the towel to dab your cheeks and your neck area if the pain reaches there.

If your sinusitis is a symptom that accompanies a cold or flu, drinking plenty of water will help. Water will help drain your sinuses by thinning out the mucus. You can also try drinking hot tea or soup. The steam you breathe from either of these two can help unclog solid mucus and improve its flow through your nasal passages.

Always practice proper hygiene to avoid acquiring infection from other people who are suffering from colds or flu. Sanitizing your hands every now and then will lower your risk for sinusitis. If you have allergies, stay away from potential triggers such as dust and animal dander as much as possible as they can also cause your sinuses to get inflamed.

Although sinusitis is potentially harmless, the symptoms that accompany it can be quite a nuisance. Protect yourself from this condition by strengthening your immune system and practicing the above tips. After trying everything you know and the matter still gets worse, consult your doctor.
